At this point we're still thinking of some ideas for our video just to add to our outline. An idea i had was to include a kaleidoscope video within/at the beginning/at the end/wherever in our music video. I think using the right colours or images could create the upbeat and interesting atmosphere we wanted to achieve in our music video.
This is just a 2 hr video of kaleidoscope designs i found on youtube, you get the drift after the first 30 seconds or so..
To include this in our music video we could take a clip from this youtube video (but i suspect that is copyright) so i decided to find out how to create the kaleidoscope effect on imovie..
Not sure if that the easiest or fastest way to achieve this but, it possible to do on Final Cut Pro too.
This won't definitely make it to the final cut of our music video but it's an idea!
I recently came across this stop motion film which I was particularly captivated by. I like the feel of the moving images and the setting it creates. I think it would work well with creating silhouettes during sunrise or sunset which the group liked.
It would be interesting to see how this would work in our music video. As the entire video might not work in stop motion considering the narrative I thought about switching from stop motion to video and to have the two continue from each other. Might be a little ambitious but will have to see what the rest of the group think about it!
These are the three possible songs we had in mind for our music video.
Corrine Bailey Ray - Put Your Records On
For:
Feel-good song, a genre we all agreed that we wanted to stick to.
Well-known. Instantly recognisable within the first few seconds.
Female singer, the only female sung song of our options. This would allow us to easily lip-sync if we decided to include it.
Against:
Dated. Released in 2006 so it is no longer current and perhaps creating a modern video to this would not be viewed positively as the song and video might contrast each other too much.
Summer feel to the song would restrict us in the video. Viewers would most likely expect sunshine in the scenes which would be hard for us to capture during the winter.
Considering the lyrics and feel to the song, it would be hard to stray from the original video.
Foals - My Number
For:
Again, instantly recognisable from the beginning. Also attracts from the beginning - some songs build up to a climax.
Conforms to the type of song we wanted - feel-good, upbeat.
Not a mainstream band, not everyone may have seen the original video which would easily give us an audience without preconceived ideas of the video or something to compare to.
Against:
Male voice, although we ruled out lip-syncing, if we had decided to include this later on in the video it would not work.
Perhaps not having a climax to the song might also be considered a negative. It might hinder our narrative in moving forward.
Repetition. The song does not give an evident flow in moving on from the beginning. Although 'One Day' is repetitive this emphasises the One Day.
Wankelmut Remix - One Day/Reckoning Song
For:
Plenty of beats to work with in terms of change of camera shots.
Goes straight into the song so again, easily recognisable. Also allows us to start the narrative straight away.
Genre of the song still allows us to create an upbeat music video. Also as the song is not very well known this also allows us to present the music video with little if any comparisons to the original video.
A) Reasons why you’ve selected this song and discarded other ideas
As a group we decided from the beginning that we were not big fans of lip syncing. We felt that this video had the right atmosphere and beat to it to allow us to keep the video to just a narrative. Also, from our class pitch it is clear that the majority preferred this song. Considering video ideas to both My Number and One Day were very similar it was clear that we probably should go for what the majority seemed to like more. As a group we liked both songs so it was all a matter of decision making.
We discarded the other songs as we felt One Day worked better for us as a group to create a more original video unlike Put Your Records On and to produce a more interesting music video.
B) Initial concept ideas for your video: locations / themes / shot types / ‘angle: feminism/political message’ / performance or concept video / lighting / links to lyrics etc…
Initial Locations : Park / Wide roads / party scenes / Residential / School /
Themes: We've always wanted to go for the 'happy' 'summer' 'feel-good' theme just to do something much more different to our film opening last year.
Shot Types(look back to 'Concept' post): Conference scene - panning/zoom in to show the entire setting of the female character who has a job very different to those in the meeting.
Dominos Girl - Tracking to follow her out of house.
Cold-Calling - Wide shot perhaps. To indicate the loneliness on the whole street.
Cleaner - Series of panning shots and tracking to set the scene and inform viewers.
Angle: The message is that everyone has that 'one day,' that 'one time' in their lives where they didn't want the day to end. With these four character we wanted to create the narrative of teens/tweens who reflect back on what their live used to be. We contrasted this with the alternating scenes of the Present(tweens) and the past(teens).
Lyrics: There is the obvious link to the lyrics 'one day.' Also, the lyrics 'think of all the stories that we could have told' tells the audience that the character are reflecting and it was perhaps another lifetime and now just a memory.
Just a quick written form of what we're all thinking. This shows our idea in a little more detail telling us what exacts jobs the characters will have, locations and who is doing what. We plan to start very soon as we want to film in a bright setting and it wont be too long now before it starts getting dark by 4. These locations and storylines also give us some flexibility and freedom for filming (not like Heathrow last year).
This is just information for the 'present day' scenes - more will be added to this for the 'past' scenes where we're younger.
Also, just to clarify the 'past' will feature us as around 17/18 years of age and the 'present' scenes will perhaps be 19/20 years old. Being realistic we knew we couldn't show the present day scenes of us in our careers at 30 so we decided on the 'one day' perhaps being a time in the summer or a year or two ago.
Today we had a class pitch for all of our video ideas and songs. For our song 'My Number' we decided to go with an upbeat atmosphere for the video. Unfortunately we couldn't quite portray our group vision and the class wanted to hear our other options. Showing our other option:
It is clear that people were more drawn to this song. So taking on board the ideas and thoughts of everyone else we too as a group have agreed on this song which we all initially liked. Our class discussion helped us to think about our video ideas also, still keeping to the upbeat and feel-good theme of a video. The music video could be very similar to the video above however, we thought about adding the element of the present and the past. The present featuring four main characters in dull jobs and the past showing the four characters together having fun and enjoying life to put it in short!
Considering the upbeat song we've chosen we wanted to create a music video which would reflect the atmosphere of the music and lyrics. We decided to put 'My Number' on full volume and say what came to our minds for video ideas. In a way this worked as it got us generating ideas and bouncing off of each others ideas. Here are a few: -Flashmob -Oversize clown glasses -Dancing -Bouncy Castle -Balloons -Coloured Smoke -Crowd That's not to say all of these will necessarily be included in our video, and to be honest a lot of it probably wont make the cut seeing as we're known for chopping and changing our ideas quite often, but these give us an overall idea of what we're all thinking for video ideas. Here are a few video which have also inspired us: Cher Lloyd ft. Mike Posner - With Your Love
During a free period today (before our scheduled team meeting) Sinead and I discussed possibilities for our media song which was basically just a game of tennis with bands, artists, songs, genres etc. Here are just a couple of the songs we were contemplating: Bastille - Bad Blood
Foals - My Number
* * * * *
And after our team meeting we've finally chosen our media song!
'My Number' - Foals is the chosen one and we're all excited to be doing this considering it ticks all the boxes of the song we would want to produce a music video for!
The high energy, feel-good, upbeat song gives us a great deal to play with in terms of camera shots, pace and the general creativity which would go into the music video.
Lucy actually suggested this song last lesson but in our state of music-overdosed minds, it was dismissed (like the 30 or so other songs which have been scrapped).
It seems that at the moment, all four of us cannot seem to unanimously decide on a song but at least we're all still relatively on the same page in terms of the genre of the song.
We've had a few more suggestions and ideas today which consist of :
Rusted Root - Send Me On My Way
Asaf Avidan - One Day
Asaf Avi dan - One Day (Wankelmut Remix) We seem to be more drawn to this version of this song as it gives us more to play with in terms of the beat and the ability to change shots often and get more creative. This has been my favourite choice today but we're not entirely agreed on this as a group. I'm completely hopeful that we will find one song all four of us love so it's all a case of finding the right song and using the right amount of persuasion!
As summer is now over, myself, Sinead, Rachel and Lucy have come together again to start formally deciding on our A2 song for our music video. We've had a few ideas bouncing off of each other and we all seem to be on the same page for the genre and theme of what we want to produce. ideally, we want to create something relaxing, upbeat and feel-good, all we need is the perfect song to do this. We've come up with a few possibilities listed below: Natasha Bedingfield - 'Unwritten' Corinne Bailey Ray - 'Put Your Records On' Mika - 'Grace Kelly' Ben King - 'Stand By Me'
We've also considered Amy Winehouse which at present would be 'Rehab.'
